Can you help me bring the bass under control?

The bass coming from my computer speakers has always been seemingly out of control. I play a lot of music on my computer using Windows Media Player and Winamp. Regardless of program, all my computer audio is too bass-heavy, even when I zero out all the bass in program controls. I have a modest set of Altec Lansing speakers, with a ’sound field expander’ toggle (on the side next to the volume dial), which seems to serve no purpose, toggled or untoggled. The sound quality is okay except for the building-shaking bass. I have to listen at a very low volume to keep the place from vibrating. I do have mostly-exposed hardwood flooring. Is it possible the acoustics built in to the speakers is designed for carpeted rooms? Are my speakers just too bass-y? Do I need a new soundcard? Suggestions appreciated.
